Today in 1945, President Harry Truman is given the full details on the Manhattan Project. The Manhattan Project was kept in secret from the public as scientist worked to develop the first Atomic bomb for possible use. Upon hearing this information, Truman was placed with a very difficult choice to use the bomb or not. Development on the atom bomb began in 1939 under the support of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. America’s fear of being under prepared in what was shaping up to be a long, bloody war, fueled the fire to the Manhattan project.
After the death of President Roosevelt, Harry Truman was sworn in and immediately informed on the details of the Manhattan project. Secretary of war Harry Stimson informed Truman that both the Germans and Russians were close to developing similar tech, raising the stakes. However as the war with Japan raged on, it seemed there would be no end in sight.
